NEW YORK JEWISH COMMUNITY
FINANCES $2.7 MILLION PURCHASE OF
PLAZA MEMORIAL FUNERAL
CHAPEL
First Time That Jewish
Community Has Acquired a Commercial Operation
To Be Operated as a
Not-For-Profit Entity
WHAT: In a move resulting from an anti-trust action by the
New York State Attorney General’s office that caused Service Corporation
International (SCI) to divest itself of several of its New York funeral homes,
the New York Jewish community, led by the two major Jewish organizations and
eight philanthropists, will announce today the details of how and why it has
purchased the Plaza Memorial Funeral Chapel and has turned it into a not-for-
profit entity to be run on behalf of the Jewish community of Greater New York
and Westchester.
WHEN: Monday, March 12, 2001
1:30
p.m. EST
WHERE: Plaza Jewish Community
Chapel
360
Amsterdam Avenue, New York City
DETAILS: The Plaza Board of Directors including Larry
Zicklin, the President of the UJA-Federation; Sandy Ehrenkranz, Jewish Communal
Fund; Rabbi David Lincoln, Park Avenue Synagogue; Rabbi Arthur Schneier, Park
East Synagogue; and community representatives from the Jewish Community Center
of the Upper West Side and the Jewish Home and Hospice will explain the reasons
why they were instrumental in purchasing Plaza. They will explain the religious implications and why as a
not-for-profit the facility will offer the community lower prices. Emphasis will be placed on helping the New
York State Attorney General’s Office restore competition to the funeral home
industry in New York – which has been virtually monopolized by one company for
years.
